ATM, tare, GTM, payload and ball weight: the numbers that decide what your car can legally tow.

ATM (aggregate trailer mass) is the maximum a fully loaded caravan may legally weigh when unhitched, tare (empty weight) plus payload (everything you add). Your car's braked towing capacity must sit above it.

Tare is the caravan's empty weight exactly as it left the factory, no water, gas, food or gear. It's the baseline every other weight builds on, and the number payload is added to.

GTM (gross trailer mass) is the weight on the caravan's own axles while it's hitched, the ATM minus the ball weight resting on the tow bar. GTM is always a little less than ATM.

Payload is everything you add after the factory build, water, gas, food, clothing, tools and accessories. It's the gap between tare and ATM, and it fills up faster than most people expect.

Ball weight (tow-ball download) is the downward force the coupling puts on your tow bar, usually around 10% of the loaded ATM. It must stay under both your tow bar's and your car's rated download limits.

Most family caravans weigh around 2,000-3,500 kg loaded (ATM); lighter couples' and hybrid vans start near 1,500-2,000 kg. Always tow to the plated ATM, not the tare, and confirm the loaded rig at a weighbridge.

Yes, if the loaded caravan (its ATM) is under your car's braked towing capacity, the ball weight (about 10% of ATM) is under your towball limit, and car and van together are under your GCM. Confirm at a weighbridge, and see what can your car tow? for the full method.

Figures across this guide are indicative and general in nature, not personal advice. Weights, capacities and prices vary by model, layout and options. Always confirm loaded weights at a licensed weighbridge and your vehicle's rated limits with the manufacturer before you buy or tow.
