The decisions that come up again and again when you are shortlisting a van.

Work through six decisions in order: where you'll travel (terrain), how big a van you need (size and layout), what your car can legally tow (weights), how you'll power it (power and water), what it will really cost (budget), and whether to buy new or used. Terrain and tow limit narrow the field fastest.

New gives you warranty, current compliance and exactly the spec you want; used saves money but needs careful checking of weights, water damage, service history and the compliance plate. Either way, the weight and tow-match rules are the same.

Beyond the purchase price, budget for on-road costs, insurance, servicing, storage, accessories and the tow vehicle itself. A cheaper van you can't legally tow, or can't afford to run, isn't actually cheaper, cost the whole setup, not just the sticker.

Match the layout to who travels: couples can go lighter and shorter, families need bunks and bathroom space, full-timers want storage. Remember a longer, heavier van is also a towing decision, size affects what your car can legally pull.

Yes, if the caravan's loaded ATM is under your car's braked towing capacity, the ball weight is under your towbar limit, and car and van together are under your GCM. See what can your car tow? for the full check.

Learn ATM, tare, payload, GTM and ball weight. They decide whether a van suits your car. Our caravan weights explained guide covers each in plain English.

This guide is general information to help you work through the buying decision, not personal advice. Weights, capacities, prices and running costs vary by model, layout, options and your circumstances. Always confirm loaded weights at a licensed weighbridge, your vehicle's limits with its manufacturer, and current pricing with your dealer before you buy or tow.
