Braked capacity, ATM, ball weight and GCM: the three checks that decide a legal tow match.

Your car's maximum braked towing capacity is on the vehicle's compliance or towbar plate and in the owner's handbook. That figure is the most it can legally tow with a braked trailer, the caravan's loaded ATM must sit at or below it.

Compare it to the loaded ATM, the fully loaded maximum weight, not the tare or GTM. If the van's ATM is at or under your car's braked towing capacity, it's a match on that measure.

Tow-ball weight is the download the coupling puts on your towbar, usually around 10% of the caravan's ATM. It must stay under your towbar's and vehicle's rated download limit, which is listed in the handbook.

GCM (gross combination mass) is the most your car and loaded van may weigh together. It is often less than the car's GVM plus its towing capacity, so you can be under each limit individually yet over GCM combined.

A weight distribution hitch spreads ball weight across the axles and can improve stability on heavier rigs, but it doesn't increase any legal limit. Whether you need one depends on your car, van and ball weight. Check your vehicle maker's guidance.

Many dual-cab utes and larger SUVs are rated to tow 3,000-3,500 kg braked, enough for a lot of caravans. But the rating alone is not the answer. You still have to stay under ball-weight and GCM limits with the car loaded. Confirm at a weighbridge.

No. The '85%' guideline, a van no heavier than 85% of the car's kerb weight, is a rule of thumb for stability, not a legal requirement. The legal limits are your car's braked towing capacity, towball limit and GCM.

Figures in this guide, including vehicle towing capacities, are indicative and general in nature, not personal advice. Towing limits vary by vehicle model, variant and build date, and by caravan model, layout and options. Always confirm your vehicle's rated limits with the manufacturer and your caravan's loaded weights at a licensed weighbridge before you tow.
